$1M–$10M (country projects); $50K–$250K (AFCIA innovation grants)
Multilateral fund established under the Kyoto Protocol to finance concrete adaptation projects in developing countries vulnerable to climate change. Funds projects through accredited National Implementing Entities (NIEs) and Multilateral Implementing Entities (MIEs). Also runs the Adaptation Fund Climate Innovation Accelerator (AFCIA) with UNDP, which directly supports climate adaptation innovators and startups at seed stage or beyond.
Adaptation Grants
Up to $10M per country for concrete adaptation projects through accredited entities.
Innovation Accelerator (AFCIA)
6-month Sprint Programme with funding for climate adaptation innovators at seed stage+.
Readiness Grants
Support for NIEs to strengthen institutional capacity for accessing and managing climate finance.
Climate-Resilient Agriculture
Projects strengthening food security and agricultural resilience for vulnerable communities.
Water Resource Management
Adaptation solutions for water scarcity, flood management, and water quality.
Coastal & Urban Resilience
Protection of vulnerable coastal and urban communities from climate impacts.
Climate Innovation (AFCIA)
Innovative solutions for adaptation challenges, delivered through UNDP accelerator.
Climate adaptation projects addressing concrete vulnerabilities in developing countries. AFCIA seeks innovative solutions that can scale adaptation impact. Strong emphasis on community-level resilience, food security, and water management.
Technical support through implementing entities. AFCIA provides 6-month Sprint Programme with mentorship and acceleration support.
Very bureaucratic process for country projects — requires accredited entity intermediary. Long decision timelines (Board meets twice yearly). Startups cannot apply directly to the main fund. AFCIA is the only realistic pathway for startups/innovators.
For startups: apply through AFCIA (managed by UNDP), not the main Adaptation Fund. For larger projects: identify your country's NIE first. The Fund prioritizes countries that have not yet received funding.
