The Africa Oxford Initiative (AfOx) is a University of Oxford programme building research and innovation capacity across Africa. Its most entrepreneur-relevant programme is the AfOx Health Innovation Programme (AfOx-HIP), which supports African innovators developing solutions to health challenges through a two-phase programme: virtual training (Phase 1, up to 50 innovators) followed by an Oxford Innovation Fellowship (Phase 2, selected participants) with personalized technical support and a week-long boot camp at Oxford.
Phase 1: Virtual Innovation Programme
Up to 50 innovators per cohort receive practical training in innovation and entrepreneurship in health for Africa (8-10 hours/week, flexible schedule)
Phase 2: Oxford Innovation Fellowship
Selected Phase 1 graduates receive personalised technical support from Oxford collaborators, advanced training, and a week-long boot camp at the University of Oxford
Oxford Network Access
Access to University of Oxford research resources, library, and expert network across disciplines
Mentorship
Guidance from Oxford-based researchers and innovation experts throughout the programme
Health Innovation
Any technology or discipline creating solutions for disease prevention, diagnosis, management, and treatment — including vaccines, diagnostics, medical devices, therapeutics, surgical devices, and digital health tools
African innovators with strong scientific or technological foundations developing practical solutions to Africa's health challenges. Not limited to academics — entrepreneurs and small teams with health innovations welcome. Solutions must address real health needs: prevention, diagnosis, management, or treatment of disease.
Phase 2 fellows receive personalised technical support from Oxford collaborators, advanced training workshops, a week-long boot camp at the University of Oxford, and ongoing access to the AfOx innovation network. The programme is designed to accelerate research-to-market translation for health innovations.
The real value is the Oxford connection — personalized technical support from world-class researchers and the credibility of an Oxford Innovation Fellowship. Phase 1 is designed for accessibility (8-10 hrs/week, virtual) so busy entrepreneur-innovators can participate. You do not need to be an academic to apply. AfOx-HIP works with any health technology discipline, not just life sciences — engineering and digital health are equally welcome.
