$500K – $10M
The IKEA Foundation provides grants, donations, and long-term strategic partnerships for organisations working in energy, land, food and forests, buildings and transport, and emergency response. Typical grant size is $500K to $10M. Its geographic focus includes East Africa, West Africa, and Southern Africa, with particular attention to refugee-hosting countries such as Kenya, Ethiopia, and Uganda.
Grants and donations
The IKEA Foundation provides active grants and donations, including support for special initiatives and emergency response programmes.
Long-term strategic partnerships
The foundation builds long-term, strategic partnerships with both large and small organisations to develop innovative solutions and change complex systems.
Energy
Accelerating long-term change in high-emitting systems with a direct impact on people’s lives.
Land, Food & Forests
Accelerating long-term change in high-emitting systems with a direct impact on people’s lives.
Buildings & Transport
Accelerating long-term change in high-emitting systems with a direct impact on people’s lives.
Emergency response
Rapid support to people impacted by humanitarian crises.
Large-scale programs that address root causes of poverty and climate change. Particularly interested in renewable energy access for off-grid communities, economic inclusion for refugees and displaced people, and sustainable agriculture. They fund at scale — looking for interventions that can reach millions.
Multi-year funding (3-5 years typical), learning partnerships, convening, influence and advocacy support
Primarily works through large intermediary organizations (UNHCR, GIZ, large NGOs). Direct access for smaller organizations is limited. Strategic pivots in priorities do occur.
Applications should align clearly to one of the foundation’s named focus areas and show how the work contributes to long-term systems change or emergency response. Given its stated interest in strategic partnerships, organisations should present a strong case for scalable collaboration, especially in refugee-hosting countries in East, West, or Southern Africa.
