Prince Claus Fund’s Africa Culture opportunity supports individual artists and cultural practitioners in Africa whose work addresses socially engaged or socio-political issues, especially in places where culture is under pressure. Its programmes include the FELLOWS Award, which supports up to 50 artists through a year-long development programme, and the SEED Award, which supports 100 emerging artists. Additional support can include urgent assistance, professional development opportunities, residencies, workshops, and exchanges with creative communities in Amsterdam.
FELLOWS Award
Offers up to 50 artists a year-long programme to accelerate their socially engaged art practices and facilitate meaningful connections between creatives working on similar themes.
SEED Award
Encourages the careers, creativity and experimentation of 100 emerging artists whose work engages with socio-political issues within their local context.
Urgency Programme
Provides rapid support to Seed and Fellows Award recipients whose artistic practices are disrupted by unforeseen and urgent circumstances.
Fertile Ground
Offers additional support and opportunities to Prince Claus Seed Awardees by connecting organisations from the global network that offer platforms to showcase work, participate in residencies or workshops, and catalyse professional development.
Exchanges
Connects Prince Claus Awardees with Amsterdam’s diverse creative communities, fostering collaboration, knowledge-sharing, and lasting cultural relationships.
Culture and development
The Prince Claus Fund is dedicated to culture and development.
Socially engaged art practices
Supports artists working on socially engaged themes.
Socio-political issues
Supports emerging artists whose work engages with socio-political issues within their local context.
Cultural expression under pressure
Serves artists and cultural practitioners in places where culture is under pressure.
Culture and development nexus
Reporting support, capacity building, peer learning network
Confirm current funding cycle is open. Review reporting burden. Check geographic restrictions.
This opportunity is for individuals, not organisations, so applicants should present a clear personal artistic practice and explain how their work engages with local socio-political issues. It will help to show both the social relevance of the work and why the local cultural context creates pressure or constraints for artistic expression.
