Multiple African teachers have been Top 10 finalists. Peter Tabichi (Kenya) won in 2019, becoming the first African winner. The prize is open to self-nomination — teachers do not need to be nominated by others. Strong applications include video evidence of teaching impact and community letters of support. The ceremony at the World Governments Summit provides unique visibility with global leaders.
