What is the Value Proposition Canvas?

The Value Proposition Canvas is a framework developed by Alexander Osterwalder that helps founders design products and services around clearly defined customer needs. It maps the customer profile (jobs, pains, gains) against the value map (products and services, pain relievers, gain creators) to test whether your offering actually fits what customers want.

Who this is for and when to use it

African founders building a new product, pivoting an existing one, or trying to articulate why a current product is not selling. Use it before you build, before you spend on marketing, after a round of customer interviews, when sales conversations are not converting, or when redesigning a product that has lost traction. Treat it as a living document.

What is inside

A written guide explaining each side of the canvas with examples relevant to African markets, plus an editable spreadsheet that lets you map multiple customer segments side by side. The structure forces you to evidence each pain reliever and gain creator with a specific product feature. Pair with The Value Proposition Canvas Guide for the full narrative explanation.

Key concepts you will learn

Customer jobs (functional, emotional, social), pains (frustrations, blockers, undesired outcomes), gains (desired outcomes and benefits), product-market fit signals, the difference between problem-solution fit and product-market fit, and the link between the Value Proposition Canvas and the Business Model Canvas.

Frequently asked questions

How is this different from a customer persona?
A persona describes who the customer is. The Value Proposition Canvas describes what the customer is trying to get done. Personas are useful, but they do not always tell you whether your product solves a real problem.
Do I fill in the customer profile or the value map first?
Always start with the customer side. If you start with your product, you will end up bending the customer profile to justify what you have already built.
Should I have one canvas per customer segment?
Yes. Different segments have different jobs, pains, and gains. Trying to serve them all with one canvas usually leads to a watered-down value proposition.
How does this connect to the Business Model Canvas?
The Value Proposition Canvas zooms into the customer segments and value propositions blocks of the Business Model Canvas. Once you have clarity here, that work flows directly into your broader business model.
